Foreign Language in the Elementary School

Exposure to another language is beneficial to address the communication challenges within today’s global society.  Learning a world language provides a competitive edge in career choices for today’s 21st Century Student. Study of a second language results in cognitive benefits, gains in academic achievement and positive attitudes towards diversity. Rosenbusch, 1995

Students will be more comfortable and confident in a multicultural world as a result of the FLES program.

History

The Cedar Rapids Community School District implemented an Elementary Spanish Program during the 2011-2012 school year in all kindergarten and first grade classrooms across the District.  One additional grade level will be added each subsequent year, with grades K-5 included in the program by the 2015 school year.
